Why Goal Setting Isn’t the Same as Manifestation
One runs on willpower. The other runs on alignment.
Whenever I introduce manifestation into conversation—especially with someone who’s never really explored it before—the response is almost always the same.
“Ohhh… you mean goal setting?”
It’s a fair assumption. From the outside, they can look similar:
Desire + Focus + Action.
But underneath, they run on completely different wiring.
And that misunderstanding? It’s the very thing that keeps so many people stuck, burnt out, or quietly wondering why they’ve done everything “right”… and still haven’t received what they truly want. Quite possibly, it’s also why life can feel like one step forward, two steps back.
So let’s explore the difference—and why you might want to start looking at manifestation through a completely different lens.
Because once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
Goal setting and true manifestation may look similar from the outside, but they operate on fundamentally different frequencies. And confusing the two can keep you looping in frustration, thinking you’re the problem… when really, it’s the method that’s misaligned.
Here’s the distinction most people miss:
Goal setting is willpower-driven.
Manifestation is embodiment-led.
Big, huge difference.
Let’s unpack that…
The Mechanics of Goal Setting
Goal setting is about control and action—following a path you’ve consciously laid out.
It says: “I decide where I want to go, then I make it happen.”
It’s future-focused. Often rigid. Usually built around timelines, deadlines, benchmarks, and hustle.
It relies on logic, structure, skill, and productivity.
And for many, it works—until it doesn’t.
Why?
Because goal setting often overrides your physiological self.
It pushes. It forces. It strives to make things happen, because you’ve been taught that this is how achievement works.
Even when your nervous system is silently shaking its head behind the scenes, whispering: “This is so hard.”
I hate to mention burnout, but it has all the hallmarks.
You try to hit the goal but miss. So you iterate. Again and again. Until finally, you succeed.
Good on you for hitting that goal. But at what cost?
Very often, you’re left depleted, battered, and bruised. Or, after all that effort, you still miss the mark—and feel like an utter failure. (Ask me how I know!)
Either way, your self-worth ends up tethered to the outcome.
That’s not power. That’s pressure. That’s force.
I’m exhausted just typing about it.
To put this into context, let’s consider finding a new home—buying or renting, it doesn’t really matter.
You make a list (which is usually based on what you believe you will get within your budget - also known as probability thinking), scour the internet, pound the pavement, and get friendly with every estate agent in the area.
“It’s a numbers game,” you say, grinding your way through the process. Get frustrated and very likely, eventually, “settle” on something close—and that’s perfectly fine… for now.
The Nature of True Manifestation
True manifestation is different.
It can start with a checklist—but ultimately, it starts with a frequency.
With desire.
With resonance.
With your internal sense of what feels true to you now—not just what looks good on paper.
Manifestation is not a numbers game.
It isn’t about chasing something “out there.”
It’s about clearing everything in the way of you receiving what’s already yours and on its way.
That means your nervous system has to completely believe you’re safe to receive it.
This is more than wishing.
More than hoping.
More than faith.
It’s belief that’s anchored in deep knowing.
No amount of vision boarding or goal-crushing will compensate for a body that’s bracing for rejection, failure, competition, or loss.
Manifestation doesn’t respond to how badly you want something.
It responds to how deeply connected you are to the feeling of already having it.
So, going back to the house purchase or rental example. You still make your list, and it’s as pie in the sky as you like (possibility thinking). And yes, of course you still look for properties.
So what’s the difference you might be wondering?
You align with already having it. Maybe you go out and enjoy purchasing some bits and bobs that will add to your home (even though you currently don’t have it) like buying a piece of furniture or planning out the kind of kitchen you would like.
And because you understand how manifestation works, you know it’s not a numbers game when it’s already yours. The universe will provide exactly what you want when the time is right. So you don’t get frustrated or lose faith or settle on something close. Nor do you go over budget because the universe knows your budget too.
The universe is just working out a way to deliver it to you.
Why You Can’t “Think” Your Way Into Alignment
This is where most people get stuck.
They set goals. Visualise. Repeat affirmations. Meditate.
Give away money.
Study manifestation in a rinse-and-repeat, soul-destroying cycle.
But still—nothing lands.
And then comes the shame spiral:
“I must not believe in myself enough.”
“Maybe I’m not spiritual enough, disciplined enough, high-vibe enough.”
“Maybe I’m carrying curses from my ancestors.”
No. And let me say that again—no.
The truth is, you can’t out-think your nervous system. But you can trick it (but I’ll save that for another post).
If your body associates success with burnout… or visibility with criticism… or money with family tension—your subconscious will slam on the brakes.
Not to punish you but to protect you.
And it doesn’t matter how beautifully your goal is written on paper.
If your system sees it as a threat (doubt is a threat as it leads to disappointment), you’ll sabotage, delay, or block it—without even realising why.
The Bridge Between the Two? Curiosity.
If you’ve followed the last couple of posts, you’ll know I always return to this:
Curiosity is the game-changer.
Where goal setting pushes you into action, curiosity invites pause.
It opens the door to more effective questions, like:
“What am I trying to prove with this goal?”
“What is my anxiety trying to show me?”
“What part of me doesn’t feel safe to receive this?”
When we approach our desires with curiosity instead of control, something shifts.
We stop micromanaging the outcome.
We start tuning into the body’s own language.
We allow inspiration to replace obligation.
And from that place… manifestation flows.
So… Do I Stop Setting Goals?
Not at all.
In fact, I encourage you to set more—stretch yourself even further. Make them even bigger, bolder, brighter.
There’s a place for clarity, structure, and action.
But let your goals be rooted in truth, not trauma.
Let them arise from inner safety, not outer pressure.
Set the intention.
Hold the vision.
But make space for something better than you imagined to show up for you.
After all—how could you possibly know all the infinite possibilities available to you?
That’s the dance of manifestation.
It’s alive.
It’s relational.
And it’s always working with you—not against you.
Final Thought
Goal setting asks: “What do I need to do?”
Manifestation asks: “Who am I becoming?”
When you align with the latter, you stop chasing outcomes.
And you start attracting experiences that reflect your truest, most regulated self.
That’s not just success.
That’s sovereignty.
P.S. Anxiety is just one of the 850+ signs I’ve discovered so far in the manifestation process. So it’s not entirely a bad thing—anxiety is often a signal to pause, tune in, and question your internal world. Perhaps because you’ve got so much more to learn, bright light.
Eternally curious,
MM
