The Belief Trap
Why Your Nervous System is Sabotaging Manifestation
There’s lots of talk about manifestation. It was, after all, the most searched word in the Cambridge Dictionary last year. But if so many are “trying” to manifest, why are only a few success at it?
One word - Belief.
Belief isn’t something you can decide into existence. And no matter how many times you affirm something, if your nervous system argues what you are saying is wrong, you will not manifest it.
Your nervous system has been the one pulling the strings all along—quietly, invisibly, and with more power than your affirmations ever had.
Belief is everything. It’s even in a phrase:
“If you believe it, you’ll receive it.”
Even Theodore Roosevelt famously said:
“Believe you can and you're halfway there.”
But here’s a truth that unraveled years of frustration for me:
You cannot fight your nervous system when it does not agree with you.
That sentence changed the course of my manifestation journey. And yet, it’s one of the most overlooked truths in the entire field.
Why Affirmations Fall Flat (Even When You’re Doing Everything Right)
For years, I played by the rules.
I repeated affirmations daily until I was blue in the face. When that didn’t work, I upgraded them with incantations - In other words, yelling!
I visualised until my brain hurt.
Vision boards? Magazine pictures where plastered all over my walls.
Journaling? I filled books, upon books, upon books, writing until my hand felt crippled.
And still—nothing. No manifestation. And that niggling doubt that sat like a stone in my tummy just got bigger and bigger. There was little alignment.
I kept telling myself, “I am abundant!” yet my body was saying, “No, you’re not. Not safe. Not worthy. Not ready.”
And guess who wins in that standoff?
The body. Every. Single. Time.
What I’m saying here is that no matter what you do or say, if your subconscious does not agree with what you are saying and doing, you will not win. In essence, your subconscious is even stealing your free will.
So you need to think differently. You need to outsmart your subconscious mind that is ultimately feeding your internal responses.
The Hidden Gatekeeper of Manifestation
Here’s the part no one wants to say out loud:
You can’t manifest what your nervous system won’t let you feel safe having.
You may consciously desire more followers, money, love, freedom, abundance or opportunity. But if any part of your system associates those things with past pain—abandonment, failure, pressure, exposure, judgement—your body hits the brakes and you are screwed.
FYI, it’s not because you’re broken. Nor is it about some hidden ancestral wrong doing that has been passed down generations that you are still carrying within your auric field. No at all. It’s just because it’s trying to protect you, even from your soul’s greatest desires.
And no amount of mindset work can override a body that’s bracing for impact.
Why Safety Comes Before Strategy
This is why I teach my clients:
“Manifestation doesn’t begin on the vision board.
It begins in the body.”
Belief isn’t mental. It’s physiological.
It’s a state. A frequency. A felt sense. Embodiment.
The nervous system is constantly scanning your environment and your imagination, asking:
Is this safe or dangerous?
Is this familiar or unfamiliar?
Is this aligned with our lived experience—or not?
And if your body associates your desire with uncertainty or threat, it will resist—even if your conscious mind is saying, “But I really, really, really, really, really, want this!”
Essentially it is self-sabotage. But it’s more than that. It’s your body trying to keep you within what it knows, understands, is familiar with. It’s trying to not just survive, but also save energy.
From Forcing to Feeling: The Real Shift in Manifestation
Rather than trying to “believe harder,” I invite you to try something different:
Instead of asking: Is this possible?
Try Asking: Does this feel safe in my body?
If the answer is no, that’s not a reason to panic. It’s your invitation to bring in something I consider one of the most powerful tools in the manifestation process:
Curiosity.
Curiosity: The Missing Bridge Between Resistance and Receptivity
Curiosity is gentle. It doesn’t demand proof or performance. It doesn’t yell over the body’s “no.” It listens.
It invites the nervous system to explore new pathways without pressure.
Why not Ask yourself:
What would it feel like to play with this possibility?
Where have I already experienced a version of this, even if small?
What’s one tiny adjustment that might feel a little safer right now?
Or why not ask, what I call a super-conscious question like, “What could I do that will improve my belief?”
This is how you soften resistance.
This is how you rewire safety.
And ultimately how you build a bridge toward belief in a way your whole system can walk across.
The Insight Most Leave Out
Belief is not just a mindset.
It’s a physiological state that shows readiness.
That’s the difference between those who force manifestation and those who live it.
When you understand this, you stop blaming yourself for struggling to believe.
You stop treating doubt like a personal failure.
You stop trying to “high-vibe” your way through trauma responses.
And instead—you begin to listen to your body as a collaborator, not a saboteur.
Try This Practice Today
Name a desire. Any one will do.
Now pause and centre yourself through intentional focused slow breathing.
Ask yourself, “What part of me feels unsafe, doubtful or not ready to receive this now?”
Don’t rush to fix it. Just notice.
Breathe into that part.
Place a hand there if it helps.
And then ask: “What are you telling me?” or “What do I need to know?” or “What would help this feel a little safer?”
Let your answers come slowly. From sensation, not logic.
You might be surprised by the wisdom that rises when you stop trying to override it.
Final Thought
This is not about being bad at believing.
It’s more about just surviving in the only way your system knows how.
But now, you have a new way forward.
You get to create safety around your desires.
To choose curiosity over coercion.
To become the safe place where manifestation lands—and stays.
That’s not magic.
That’s mastery.
And it changes everything.
